Kopernik przedstawiony został na dachu katedry fromborskiej, tam prowadził swoje nocne obserwacje nieba i gwiazd. Z dachu rozciąga się widok na zabudowania Fromborka i Zalew Wiślany. Dzieło jest pierwszym szkicem olejnym do obrazu Astronom Mikołaj Kopernik czyli rozmowa z Bogiem z r. 1873. W stosunku do obrazu szkic różni się w szczegółach. W latach 1491–1495 Kopernik studiował na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim, potem wyjechał do Włoch, gdzie w Ferrarze uzyskał stopień doktora prawa kanonicznego.
