Burgos, officially the Municipality of Burgos (Ilocano: Ili ti Burgos; Tagalog: Bayan ng Burgos), is a 4th class municipality in the province of Isabela, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 26,040 people.

Burgos is 26 kilometres (16 mi) from Ilagan from 410 kilometres (250 mi) from Manila.

Etymology

The town derive its name from the Ilocano martyr Fr. José Burgos noted that the majority of the population is Ilocanos.

History

The Burgos town was established on May 18, 1967, under Republic Act No. 4877. The law sought to detach specific barrios from the municipalities of Gamu, and Aurora becoming a new municipality with its own set of officials.

In the 2020 census, the population of Burgos, Isabela, was 26,040 people, with a density of 360 inhabitants per square kilometre or 930 inhabitants per square mile.

Economic activities mainly consists of farming. It is one of the highest rice and corn producer among towns of Isabela province.

Government

Local government

As a municipality in the Province of Isabela, government officials in the provincial level are voted by the electorates of the town. The provincial government have political jurisdiction over local transactions of the municipal government.

The municipality of Burgos is governed by a mayor designated as its local chief executive and by a municipal council as its legislative body in accordance with the Local Government Code. The mayor, vice mayor, and the councilors are elected directly by the people through an election which is being held every three years.

Barangays are also headed by elected officials: Barangay Captain, Barangay Council, whose members are called Barangay Councilors. The barangays have SK federation which represents the barangay, headed by SK chairperson and whose members are called SK councilors. All officials are also elected every three years.
