Hurulu Eco (for ecological) Park was carved out at the edge of the Hurulu Forest Reserve, a designated biosphere reserve (in 1977) representing Sri Lanka dry-zone dry evergreen forests. It is an important habitat of the Sri Lankan elephant. There are other protected areas around the reserve that provide additional range for the migratory elephants without encroaching on civilization.
