The gardens were developed beginning in 1916 and were designed by architect and landscape designer William W. Bosworth. At their peak, they were considered to be among the finest in the United States. The park and gardens were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Sculpture of a lion on the stairs leading to the loggia on the lower level of the Walled Garden, to the west of the amphitheater. This lion is on the east side of the stairs.
