Im 3. Jahrhundert wurde über dem Theater ein Markt gebaut, der seine Materialien wiederverwendete, mit einem halbrunden offenen Raum, der dem Plan des Orchesters folgte. Der Markt wurde möglicherweise nach einem Brand durch die Vandalen im Jahr 425 aufgegeben. Im 6. Jahrhundert wurde auf dem Gelände ein Marktviertel der Byzantiner errichtet.
Während des 13. Jahrhunderts wurde die Alte Kathedrale der Stadt über der oberen Cavea gebaut. 1988 wurden die ersten Überreste des Theaters beim Bau des Centro regional de artesanía entdeckt. Die archäologischen Ausgrabungen und Restaurierungen wurden 2003 abgeschlossen. 2008 wurde ein von Rafael Moneo entworfenes Museum eröffnet.
