Description |
Built in the 1860's for Joseph Prather, a butcher at the nearby Northern Liberty Market. After Prather, the house became the first DC home of the Young Men's Hebrew Association (1913-1914) which served the recreational and spiritual needs of young local Jews. The YMHA evolved into today's Jewish Community Centers (DC, Fairfax,VA & Rockville, MD). After the YMHA moved out, this house became the Hebrew Home for the Aged (1914-1923) which today operates in Rockville, MD. Shomrei Shabbos, an Orthodox Jewish synagogue, occupied this house for about 20 years. In 1947, the Church of Jesus Christ moved in, remaining until 1980. Mother Lean Sears founded the Church of Jesus Christ after nearby Bible Way Church refused to let women preach. Shortly after the Church of Jesus Christ moved out, the Metropolitan Community Church, a Christian church with a special ministry to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community, took over the space (1984), where they remained until completion of a new ministry facility one block away in 1992. Today the home is in private hands and a contributing property to the Mount Vernon Square Historic District. |
