File:Arctic Metasequoia (Ekati Diamond Mine).jpg
The Arctic had a California climate! for 60 million years! from 100 Mya tropical turtles thru to 40 Mya fossil forests.
Amazingly, the wood's cellular structure is still intact after ~53 million years of preservation without fossilization inside a kimberlite pipe north of the current treeline. This mummified sample is a gift to the Hamlet of Kugluktuk from BHP Billiton. The specimen was being moved from one display case to another, allowing me the opportunity to photograph it. The NWT diamond mine site is geotagged.
