mo-ment in the art of a man who would keep a statue inhis studio for years if he were not content with its firststate, I would wish to turn now to a question bearingupon his whole record. This is the question of what sub-ject, aside from portraiture, meant to him. The onlynude figure in the list of his works is the Diana sur-mounting the tower of the Madison Square Garden inNew York. As first modelled and placed in position thiswas eighteen feet high; but Saint-Gaudens and StanfordWhite took it down at their own expense and replacedit by the present version, which is five feet shorter. Theincident emphasizes the point that this was not projected24 ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON Stevenson was staying for a short time at a New York hotelon his way to the Adirondacks in 1887. He gave SaintGaudens five sittings of two hours each for the head andshoulders of this medallion. In modelling the hands thesculptor used drawings and casts made at Manasquan justprior to the romancers departure for Samoa.
