- Exhibit caption (2014): Thomas Nast, the quintessential American political cartoonist, began his career as a sketch artist for the New York Illustrated News during the American Civil War. Just twenty-one when he drew this image of the Battle of Big Bethel, capturing Duryee's Zouaves, the Fifth New York Regiment, during their final charge into battle.
