Beyond the huge postal site the frontages of the buildings on Heiligegeist Strasse, the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit quarter of central Berlin

The post office dated from the early 1880s rebuild. Nothing in this picture survives, in GDR times, it became Marx Engels Forum, with the since demoilished Palast der Republic across the Spree on the site of the [since rebuilt] Schloss. Only the southern extension of Burg= and Poststrasse survive on the extreme left as streets. Rathausstrasse follows the line of KoenigStrasse, the photo must have been taken from the top of the Rotes Rathaus.
