The Bosphorus Bridge (also known as The First Bridge), is one of two suspension bridges that cross the Bosphorus. By the 1950s, İstanbul’s rapidly growing population and heightened traffic between the Asian and European sides made this bridge a necessity. Turkish Prime Minister Adnan Menderes initiated the bridge’s realization in 1960 but this process was interrupted by the military coup of May 27, 1960. Construction eventually began in 1970 and the bridge opened on October 30, 1973 marking the 50th anniversary of the Turkish Republic. In 1978 the bridge was closed to pedestarians. An increasing need of further highways saw the Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge open in 1988. The construction of a third bridge, inaugurated in 2013, is still underway. SALT Research, Photograph Archive
Günümüzde Birinci Köprü olarak da bilinen Boğaziçi Köprüsü, İstanbul Boğazı üzerinde yer alan iki asma köprüden biridir. 1950 sonrası İstanbul nüfusu ile Avrupa-Asya arasındaki trafiğin hızla artması, Boğaz’a bir köprü yapılmasını zorunlu hâle getirdi. 1960’ta Adnan Menderes döneminde başlatılan proje, aynı yıl 27 Mayıs’taki ihtilalle kesintiye uğradı. İnşaatı üç yılda tamamlanan köprü 30 Ekim 1973’te, Cumhuriyetin 50. yılı şerefine törenle hizmete açıldı. 1978’de ise yaya trafiğine kapatıldı. Yıllar içerisinde artan trafik ve karayolu ihtiyacı nedeniyle 1988’de Fatih Sultan Mehmet Köprüsü inşa edildi. 2013’te temeli atılan üçüncü köprünün çalışmaları hâlen sürmektedir.
