O castelo de Sesimbra foi conquistado por D. Afonso Henriques em 1165. Pensa-se que terá sido edificado sobre um castelo já existente, de construção árabe. Conserva ainda hoje os dois elementos essenciais da fortificação medieva: a muralha e a alcáçova. No perímetro das suas muralhas, existe a Igreja de Santa Maria ou de Nossa Senhora do Castelo, um importante exemplar da arquitectura religiosa popular portuguesa, construído no século XII. <a href="http://www.sado2000.pt/concelhos.php?codigo=11">www.sado2000.pt/concelhos.php?codigo=11</a>
