File:CliffHouseStorm.jpg
Undoubtably one of the most reproduced Cliff House photographs, it depicts the Cliff House around 1900 illuminated by the dramatic natural lighting, what seems to be a looming thunder storm. It was taken by the Japanese-American photographer Tsunekichi Imai (1872-1929), who opened a studio in San Francisco about 1900. (http://www.cliffhouseproject.com/photos/storm/storm.htm) Though sometimes thought to be lightning in the background, close observation reveals that the edge of the clouds/fog are being lit by the setting sun, and that there is no storm at all. Frequently reproduced, the photograph was used on the cover of the 1988 record album Imaginos by Blue Öyster Cult.
