La imagen, de gran sobriedad, destaca por su serena paz. Cristo parece estar dormido y su rostro da la impresión de no haber sufrido el martirio de la Pasión. La talla representa el momento justo después de haber muerto.
Con una sensibilidad más cercana al neoclasicismo, el cuerpo de la escultura dibuja la denominada "curva praxiteliana" y su semblante refleja calma y sosiego, en contraposición a los atormentados cristos barrocos. La policromía contribuye decisivamente a lograr ésta apariencia, pues carece de cualquier estridencia, los signos de la Pasión son casi imperceptibles y mostrados allí donde son estrictamente necesarios como en el costado derecho, frente, manos y pies.
