De 1914 à 1919, il sert dans la Marine Nationale, sur au moins 4 navires, dont le sous-marin "Rubis" et le cuirassé "Jean-Bart".

Henri HÉRIOT est membre de l'association universelle d'espéranto (UEA, Universala Esperanto Asocio). A ce titre, il a accumulé une importante collection de cartes postales provenant de multiples pays qui s'ajoutent à celles qu'il a lui-même envoyées pendant la guerre.
