曹洞宗の開祖である道元禅師が、宋での修業を終えて帰国した嘉禄 3 年(1227) に、禅の奥儀を選んで記述した書。永平寺に伝わる本巻は、帰国から 6 年後の天福 元年(1233)に禅師が自ら書いたものである。添付の寄進状と外箱の銘から、嘉永 5 年(1852)頃に古筆了伴によって永平寺に寄進されたことがわかっている。寸法

は縦28.8cm、全長318.7cm。昭和27 年3 月29 日に国宝に指定。
