Su obra se enmarca en la tradición continuadora de las vanguardias literarias latinoamericanas del siglo XX. Ampliamente reconocido a nivel Hispanoamericano, fue galardonado, entre otros, con el Premio Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana 1992, el Premio Nacional de Literatura de Chile 1992 y el Premio Cervantes 2003.
