...And indeed today's eagle-eyes were trained on the bookshelves, spotting 19th century books on farming and animal husbandry. However, it is the shelves and the walls themselves that help us date this photograph. As it seems that this part of Howth Castle was built to designs of architect Edwin Lutyens in 1910/1911. And so this image dates to no earlier than 1911 - and possibly a few years after it. We also learned from today's contributors (and indeed saw for ourselves) that the room is largely as was 100 years hence, and that the St Lawrence/Gaisford family (whose ancestor's trunk is visible here) still call the castle their home....
