In the 1950s it served as the home of the Rector of what was then called Canterbury College.
In 1954 the then-Rector's daughter, Juliet Hulme and her friend Pauline Parker bludgeoned to death Parker's mother. This is the plot of the film Heavenly Creatures. A number of scenes in the film were filmed in the grounds.(Reusing this file)
