Five B-29s of the 881st BS/500th BG/73rd BW. The closest plane is Z-19 B-29-15-BA 42-63435 SNA PE FORT, flown normally by 1Lt Robert Althoff. The plane on the right of the image is Z-14 B-29-30-MO 42-65346 flown by 1Lt Walter Mather. Behind and to the left of 1Lt Mather’s plane was Z-15 B-29-70-BW 44-69944 Fire Bug flown by 1Lt Claude Bower. The plane closest to the top was Z-11 B-29-45-BW 42-24744 Lucky Eleven flown by Lt Lewis. The plane in the far back is unknown. The photo was taken by left gunner Sgt Howard Clos of Lt Curtis’ crew on plane Z-12.

The mission was on 29 May 1945, when 454 B-29s escorted by 101 P-51s bombed Yokohama, Japan, destroying 34% of the city by dropping incendiary bombs in broad daylight.
