An oil portrait of Ioannis Varvakis (Ivan Andreevich Varvatsi) Attributed to Vladimir Borovikovsky (1757-1825).

Born on the Greek Island of Psara, Varvakis became a skilful sailor and built a ship, the St.Andrew, which he later offered (with his crew) to the Russian forces during the Turkish War. He showed extraordinary courage during the battle of Chesma and later settled in Astrakhan and Taganrog. He fought in the Greek War of Independence and died on Zanthe, January 10, 1825.

In this portrait he wears the diamond order of St. Anne and the order of St. Vladimir.
