File:Kyrgyzstan Burana Balbal Field.jpg
At the Burana Tower site is a collection of 6th- to 10th-century balbals—Turkic tombstones—gathered from throughout Kyrgyzstan. The faces seem to depict the uniqueness of the deceased. Traditionally the left hand holds a sword and the right hand holds a chalice with mare’s milk as a sign of welcome.
