L'Empereur Hadrien construisit pour lui et ses successeurs, vers 130, le Mausolée connu aujourd'hui sous le nom de Château Saint-Ange.
Il était composé d'un soubassement carré de 90 m de coté et de 15 m de haut, surmonté d'un tambour cylindrique. La partie supérieure était recouverte de terre et de cyprès.
La partie supérieure et la fortification datent du Moyen-Âge. Il a été transformé en résidence pontificale à partir du XVème siècle.
