No. 58 WILLIAM ADOLPHE BOUGITEREAU FRENCH (1825-1905) MATERNAL AFFECTION A well-known example of Bouguereaus art executed in his best mannerand full of tender feeling. It shows us a young woman bending tenderly overa couch and gazing at her sleeping infant as he lies before her, his goldenhead pillowed upon her right arm. Her head is bent forward and is sup-ported on the fingers of her left hand, and her eyes are veiled by their droop-ing lids, her hair and dark complexion making effective contrast with thegolden curls and soft pink skin of the babe. Upon the couch beside thebabe are a coral and silver bells attached to a string of coral beads. The sun-light niters through heavy curtains of yellow silk, falling across the pillow, and half reveals the details of a carved bedstead and the panels on the wallof the room.
