I once drove a friend to Phoenix from Redlands, CA, for a NASCAR race. After we got home he said, 'That was the most boring ride I every took.' I guess some just don't see the beauty in the desert. While many places don't have such astounding formations as this, all of the desert appeals to me, if only for the vast open spaces one finds there.

All such formations are actually buttes. Many years ago, they would have looked more like the buttes we think of with sloping sides, but the wind has worn away all the soil, leaving just these striated monuments.
