- Significance: Begun in 1853 by Major Adolphus Heiman, one of Nashville's pioneer architects, the main building for the University of Nashville inaugurated the rich tradition of collegiate Gothic architecture in Nashville. Housing the Literary Department of the University, the building was one of the first permanent structures of higher learning in the city. The University of Nashville was one of the pioneer educational institutions in the State of Tennessee, its ancestry antedating Tennessee statehood.
