a-teau, surrounded by lesser hills and by achain of sunny valleys dedicated to thegrape and the olive. In height this pla-teau ranges from i,6oo to 2,000 feet, andit was originally clothed with a densepine, fir and redwood forest, much ofwhich remains and from which severalstreams flow. There are many cottagesfor summer or winter residence, built byEastern and San Francisco people, andseveral good hotels. The drives extendalong the four or five thousand acres ofthe mountain, over its adjacent ridges,and across the lovely surrounding val-leys. Calistoga and St. Helena are theleading resorts of the Napa Valley be-low. A gentleman who has spent sev-eral winters at La Jota Villa, on the topof the mountain, writes that the noontemperature ranges from 60° to 85. Thenights are cool, but frostless. Duringsome winters there have been one ortwo days of snow—not more than an mchfalling—just enough to give the chil-dren fun and make rabbit and deer tracksperceptible. There are many vineyards
