Poplar and Stepney Sick Asylum. For the reception of the pauper sick, under the provisions of Mr. Gathorne Hardy's Metropolitan Poor Act (1867).

The Poplar and Stepney Sick Asylum, Bromley-by-Bow: the street facade. Wood engraving. The Poplar and Stepney Sick Asylum was one of the first buildings erected under the terms of the Metropolitan Poor Act of 1867. Messrs. Harston, who came third in the competition for this building in 1868, went on to build other large hospitals, eg Lewisham Union Infirmary and Tooting Bec Asylum. The hospital is now called St Andrew's Created 1870.
