According to an old label affixed to the reverse, the sitter was godfather to Elizabeth, Lady Leitrim (d. 1817). He was promoted to the rank of major-general of the 52nd Regiment of Foot in 1761, was removed to the 10th Regiment in 1763, and was advanced to the rank of lieutenant-general in 1770.Thomas Hickey
