Plere are thevolume of water and the drop for about sevenmillion horse-power. Given charters and cash,American engineering ingenuity can hitch thepower to wheels—somehow. \\itness the waste-tunnel built for a Canadian company by Mr.Beverly R. Value. There was no room on thebank, so he drilled out the very vitals of thecataract itself. Having extended a 2,000-footdam from the shore, unwatering a slice ofNiagara above the falls, in the dry rock river-bed he sunk the great wheel-pit some 150 feetdown. From its bottom he burrowed out thelargest tunnel in the world, 158 feet deep inthe solid rock, shooting diagonally across theriver until it debouches directly behind theplunging V of the Horseshoe Fall. (Its size isshown by the pictuie on page 437.) To back such adventurous imagination theieis little lack of adventurous cash. And thecharters ?
