It was built in 1833.The first Baptist society in Savannah was organized in 1795.A church was built in Franklin square, on the site of thepresent First African Baptist church, and was dedicated in1800. It was occupied until the present church on Chippewasquare was built thirty-three years later. The Duffy StreetBaptist church is a mission of the First Baptist church. The Roman Catholic religion was established in Savan-nah during the latter part of the last century, after Georgiabecame a Royal Province. The first church was built inLiberty square, but was torn down in 1838. The Cathedralof St. John the Baptint, the domxis of the Roman CatholicSee of Savannah, on Abercorn street, fronting Lafayettesquare, is one of the finest ecclesiastical structures in theSouth. The corner stone was laid in 1874and the Cathedral was dedicated under the episcopac)^ ofBishop Gross, the present Archbishop of Oregon, in 1876.The architecture is French gothic, in the style of the greatXotre Dame Cathedral of Paris, with nave and transepts.The interior is lofty and imposing; the triple rows of groinedarches meeting at their apices, sixty-five feet above the floor,supported by columns of bronze exquisitely capped withoriginal compositions. The sanctuary is fifty feet deep andits rail is ninety-nine feet in length. The main altar is ofwhite marble. The principal side altars are to the SacredHeart and to the Virgin and to St. Joseph. Above the altarto the Virgin is a copy of Murillos Immaculate Concep-tion. Adjoining the Cathedral and connected with it bycloisters is the episcopal residence.
