The Silkstone Waggonway, mentioned on the sign, was an early (1809) horse drawn railway with a rope-hauled incline which transported coal from the collieries to a canal. DMU number 144017 in Northern Rail livery is on the 2B58 Sheffield to Huddersfield service.
