Hornfelses, rocks that have been baked by an igneous intrusion, are a common feature of w:Sourland Mountain. Here, a hornfels cliff displays metamorphosed w:argillite. The argillite typical of the area and this formation is usually gray in color, while the resulting hornfelsed argillite appears darker and more fine grained.
