File:StateLibQld 2 234340 Tunnel No. 1 On The Stanthorpe Extension Line, 1882.jpg
Railway worker emerging from the mouth of a railway tunnel. The railway cutting is deep and vegetation has yet to regenerate.
This tunnel had several names; the Big Tunnel (during construction), Overend Tunnel (the contractor who built the line), Cherry Gully Tunnel, but its proper name is the Gorge Tunnel. Work commenced in June 1878 and was completed in November 1880. It has concrete lined walls and a brick arch ceiling. It is 272m (858 feet) in length. The slug from the tunnel was used to build Gorge Dam.
