The official surrender by Japan took place aboard the MISSOURI on Sep. 2, 1945, with Shigemitsu Mamoru, representative of the Japanese emperor, signing surrender documents in the presence of ADM Chester Nimitz, representing the United States Navy, and GEN Douglas MacArthur, acting as the supreme commander of Allied forces for the proceeding.
