CHINA Mukden, Hei-lung-Kiang, and Kirin, the re-spective capitals of which are Mukden, Tsitsi-har, and Kirin. The total area is 280,000 squaremiles. Mongolia is the name given to the vaststretch of desert land which, interspersed withinfrequent oases, stretches across the greaterpart of the north of China along the Siberianfrontier. A large part of its area of 1,288,000square miles is taken up by the Gobi desert.The population is almost entirely nomadic. Thechief town is Urga. Eastern or Chinese Tur-kestan is a mountainous region lying betweenthe western tract of the Gobi desert and thePamirs, and enclosed north and south by theranges of the Tian-Shan and the highlands ofCashmere and Tibet. It possesses an area of431,000 square miles. The principal towns areKashgar and Yarkland. Sungaria or Dzun-garia, the smallest of the tributary states ofChina, lies to the northwest of Turkestan, onthe banks of the Hi River, at the junction ofMongolia, Turkestan, and the Russian provinceof Semipala
