ton,Bethlehem, etc., it was but natural to occupy the buildingat once, especially as its substantial character, in itself,made it an admirable place of defense and refuge. It stood about two hundred feet west by south fromMr. Robert Depuys present farm house, on the road lead-ing from the main road to the ferry. From here the mainroad runs in a westerly direction to Stroudsburg, five andone-half miles, and the Delaware Water Gap, and in anortheasterly direction to Bushkill, by the river, wherestood, formerly, Fort Hyndshaw. There was an oldspring on its site, and numerous relics have since been foundon the spot which corroborate the location given. As early as December, 1755, Captain Isaac Wayne wastemporarily on duty at the place, but was soon relieved byCaptain Nicholas Wetterholt, who remained in charge. This is what Commissary Jas. Young has to say aboutit, when he reached it on his tour of inspection: June 24, 1756. ... At 7 P. M. Came to Saml 472 The Pennsylvania-German Society,

Dupuis Fort. 473 Depues, mustered that Part of Captn WeatherholtsCompy that are Stationed here, a Lieut and 26 men allregularly Inlisted for 6 months as are the rest of hisCompy; Round Depues house is a Large but very Slightand ill Contrivd Staccade with a Sweevle Gun mounted oneach Corner. Mr Depue was not at home, his Son witha Son of Mr Broadheads Keeping house. They ex-pressd themselves as if they thought the Province wasobligd to them for allowing this Party to be in their house,allso made use of very arrogant Expressions of the Com-missioners, and the People of Phila in General; they seemto make a mere merchandize of the People stationed here,selling Rum at 8 d pr Gill.—Provincial Stores, 13 GdMuskets, 3 Cartooch Boxes, 13 lb Powder, 22 lb.
