Franciscan Nuns from Germany who were Drowned near Harwich in the wreck of the Deutschland Dec 7th 1875. Four of whom were interred here Decr. 13th. RIP
Franciscan Sisters,Daughters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary, Salzkotten, Germany. (a small town south-west of Paderborn) At that time, Bismarck had spied a bogy man and had from his northern German Protestant perspective cracked down on southern German Catholic tendencies , banning the Jesuits and closing seminaries for example. Apparently these five nuns were sailing to Britain to escape, persecution.
The SS Deutschland which ran aground 25 miles off Harwich was bound for the USA carrying over 120 emigrants.
