At least seven different Shay locomotives operated out of Fernwood. This Shay locomotive was manufactured by the Lima Locomotive & Machine Company on October 12, 1909, and was given Shop Number 2228. According to the Shay Locomotives website, this particular engine was a Class C 60-3 locomotive, operating with three trucks, three cylinders (12" diameter x 12" stroke), 2.211 gear ratio, and 32" diameter wheels. The boiler was fueled with wood (capacity of 2 cords) and had a water capacity of 3,000 gallons. The empty weight of the locomotive was 106,000 pounds (53 tons).
The original owner of this locomotive was Hofius Steel & Equipment Company of Seattle, Washington, and it was shipped from the manufacturer to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The Blackwell Lumber Company in Coeur d'Alene later became the owner of the locomotive, operating it on the Coeur d'Alene Southern Railroad. Blackwell Lumber Company then had the locomotive moved to their facility in Fernwood. The locomotive was later scrapped.
