The USCGC Mackinaw entering the Duluth Harbor at dusk. It spend the afternoon conducting sea trials on Lake Superior following repairs at the Fraser Shipyards. The trials were apparently a success as it departed Duluth for home the next day.
Mackinaw is a purpose built ice breaker and is the heaviest ice breaker stationed on the Great Lakes. Currently, the US Coast Guard paints the hulls of the ice breaking fleet red. In addition to ice breaking duties, the vessel is also equipped with a buoy deck and crane so it can tend aids to navigation on the Great Lakes.
