Over 2,500 people including hundreds of World War II veterans gathered for the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II ceremony aboard the Missouri (BB-63) Memorial, Sept. 2, 2005 The event, which included more than 2,500 military personnel, veterans and invited guests, commemorated Japan's formal surrender and included a missing man fly-over of F-16s by the Hawaii National Guard, a U.S. Marine Corps rifle salute and remarks by U.S. Pacific Fleet Commander, Adm. Gary Roughead.
