The Umpqua River Lighthouse was constructed between 1892 and 1894 to aid in navigation around the mouth of the Umpqua River in Oregon. It replaced an earlier lighthouse which collapsed into the river in 1864. The lighthouse is open to the public via regularly scheduled tours.
While the lighthouse is no longer administered by the United States Coast Guard, there is an active Coast Guard station in nearby Winchester Bay, Oregon. Some Coast Guard families live in residences near the old lighthouse, hence the warning sign to visitors.
