This photographic portrait showed William H. Foege, M.D., M.P.H., a former Centers for Disease Control director from 1977 - 1983. While in office, Dr. Foege worked to expand the agency's mission to include injury, violence, and chronic diseases, in addition to infectious disease monitoring and prevention.
In addition to his work as director, Dr. Foege was instrumental in ending the natural occurrence of smallpox in West Africa. He was tapped to direct the CDC’s contribution to the worldwide eradication of the disease (1969 - 1973) that was finally achieved in 1979.(Reusing this file)
