Hackberry is an unincorporated community in Cottle County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 30 in 2000.

History

A grove of hackberry trees that drew settlers to a bend in the Little Wichita River is the source of the name Hackberry. To establish the community, Will Moss and W. L. Liedtke purchased land from W. Q. Richards in 1918. To set the town apart from another named Hackberry, the post office was renamed Stewart. It was closed in 1930. In Hackberry, a cotton gin was in operation in 1924–25. Its population was 30 in 2000, compared to 26 in 1980 and 81 in 1990.

Geography

Hackberry is located on Farm to Market Road 1038 in southeastern Cottle County.

Climate

According to the Köppen climate classification system, Hackberry has a semiarid climate, abbreviated BSk on climate maps.

Education

A school was established in the community in 1914 (with the support of W.Q. Richards) and was rebuilt four years later. Today, the community is served by the Paducah Independent School District.
