Kamchatka River

The Kamchatka River (Russian: Камча́тка) is the longest river on the Kamchatka Peninsula, flowing through the rugged terrain of Kamchatka Krai in Russia's Far East. Spanning 758 kilometers (471 miles), it empties into the Pacific Ocean at Ust-Kamchatsk, located on the eastern coast of the peninsula. The river's expansive drainage basin covers an area of 55,900 square kilometers (21,600 square miles). It is renowned for its abundance of salmon, with millions of fish migrating annually to spawn, providing a vital resource for both the local ecosystem and the indigenous Itelmen people, who have historically relied on the river for sustenance. The Kamchatka River is an essential part of the region's natural heritage, supporting diverse wildlife and contributing to the area's ecological health.

Climate

Like most of its namesake peninsula, the basin of the Kamchatka River has at low altitudes a subarctic climate (Köppen Dfc) with short, cool-to-comfortable summers and freezing, snowy winters.
