Karaj County

Karaj County (Persian: شهرستان کرج) is in Alborz province, Iran. The capital of the county is the city of Karaj.

History

In 2009, the city of Asara was formed by the merger of three villages. In 2010, Karaj County was separated from Tehran province in the establishment of Alborz province.

In June 2012, Eshtehard District was separated from the county in the formation of Eshtehard County, which was divided into two districts of two rural districts each, with the city of Eshtehard as its capital and only city at the time.

In July 2013, the city of Meshkin Dasht was separated from the county to join the newly formed Fardis County.

Demographics

Population

At the time of the 2006 National Census, its population (as a part of Tehran province) was 1,709,481 in 472,365 households. The 2016 census measured the population of the county as 1,973,470 in 623,801 households, by which time it had become a part of recently established Alborz province.
