Lower Nine Mile River, Nova Scotia
Nine Mile River is home to a small United Church and a volunteer fire department.
The area now encompassing Nine Mile River was divided into Lower Nine Mile River and Nine Mile River from 1976 until 2006, when the name "Lower Nine Mile River" was rescinded and the two communities became one. The area of Renfrew, a ghost town known for its gold mining history, became a locality of Nine Mile River in 2007.
Economy
While most residents work in surrounding communities or in nearby urban centers such as Halifax, Nova Scotia or Truro, Nova Scotia, there are still several small businesses within the community. Nine Mile River has two campgrounds, Renfrew Camping and Riverland Campground, which bring an influx of seasonal residents to the community. Nine Mile River was previously home to the Renfrew Golf Course, operated by Renfrew Camping, which closed permanently in 2019.
Recreation
Nine Mile River has a large community center that offers bingo, country & western dances and jamborees. The community center also has a full-size softball field, as well as a playground.
Nine Mile River Trails in located within the community limits of Nine Mile River. The multi-use trial system features nearly 7.5km of maintained trails.
Education
Children in Nine Mile River attend school in surrounding communities, as there is not a large enough population to support a stand-alone school in the community. Children in grades primary to 5 attend school at Elmsdale District School in Elmsdale. From grades 6 to 8 children attend Riverside Education Centre in Milford. Once children reach the grades of 9 to 12, they attend Hants East Rural High School in Milford.
