Manikchhari Upazila

Manikchari (Bengali: মানিকছড়ি) is an upazila of Khagrachari District in the Division of Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Geography

Manikchari is located at 22°50′05″N 91°50′10″E / 22.8347°N 91.8361°E / 22.8347; 91.8361. It has 13,335 households and total area 168.34 km.

As of the 2011 Bangladesh census, Manikchhari upazila had 13,335 households and a population of 61,589. 17,851 (28.98%) were under 10 years of age. Manikchhari had an average literacy rate of 40.7%, compared to the national average of 51.8%, and a sex ratio of 991 females per 1000 males. 34,776 (56.46%) of the population lived in urban areas. The ethnic population was 17,690 (28.72%), of which Marma were 19,328, Tripura 3,574 and Chakma 1,101.

As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Manikchari has a population of 38,479. Males constitute 52% of the population, and females 48%. The adult (18+) population is 19,539. Manikchari has an average literacy rate of 20.4% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate.

Administration

Manikchhari Upazila is divided into four union parishads: Batnatali, Jogyachola, Manikchari, and Tintahari. The union parishads are subdivided into 12 mauzas and 160 villages.
