Template:ISSN

This template generates a link for finding data about a (print or on-line) publication via its International Standard Serial Number (ISSN). The ISSN refers to the particular publication, not to a specific issue (or date) of that publication. The ISSN is used to help establish the publication as a Wikipedia reliable source.

For a publication with the ISSN 1234-5678, use {{ISSN|1234-5678}}. The template supports up to 9 ISSNs.

Examples

{{ISSN|0028-0836}}

results in:

ISSN 0028-0836

If more than one ISSN is given, the template will separate them using a comma:

{{ISSN|0028-0836|0028-0836|0028-0836}}

results in:

ISSN 0028-0836, 0028-0836, 0028-0836

Alternatively the conjugation between the last two list items can be defined using the |leadout= parameter:

{{ISSN|0028-0836|0028-0836|0028-0836|leadout=and}}

results in:

ISSN 0028-0836, 0028-0836 and 0028-0836

If the leading "ISSN" should not be a link (for example if already linked to in the article), it can be suppressed using the |link=no parameter:

{{ISSN|0028-0836|0028-0836|0028-0836|link=no}}

results in:

ISSN 0028-0836, 0028-0836, 0028-0836

It the leading "ISSN" link should not occur (for example in longer lists), it can be suppressed using the |plainlink=yes parameter:

{{ISSN|0028-0836|0028-0836|0028-0836|plainlink=yes}}

results in:

0028-0836, 0028-0836, 0028-0836

The |plainlink= and |leadout= parameter can be used at the same time:

{{ISSN|0028-0836|0028-0836|0028-0836|plainlink=yes|leadout=as well as}}

results in:

0028-0836, 0028-0836 as well as 0028-0836

Find ISSN of publication

Note:

An ISSN is always eight digits long. Scroll down the Worldcat page to find the ISSN. Do not rely on the digits shown in the Worldcat URL for the particular publication, since the URL sometimes shows only seven digits, which is invalid to use as the ISSN.

Error checking

This template uses Module:Check isxn to validate the ISSN. If the ISSN is not valid, this subtemplate will still generate the link, and it will add the article to Category:Pages with ISSN errors. To be valid, the ISSN must contain a hyphen separating the two groups of four digits.

  • {{ISSN|09516816}} (valid ISSN, but no hyphen)   produces ISSN 09516816 Parameter error in {{issn}}: Invalid ISSN.
  • {{ISSN|0951-6816}} (valid ISSN, with hyphen)   produces ISSN 0951-6816

Since invalid ISSNs are sometimes used in publications, it is possible to disable the validity check for individual ISSNs given as parameters. In order to do so, add invalid?=yes (with ? replaced by the parameter number 1 to 9) to the template. In this case, the article will be added to Category:Articles with invalid ISSNs.

  • {{ISSN|1028-0836}}   produces ISSN 1028-0836 Parameter error in {{issn}}: Invalid ISSN.
  • {{ISSN|1028-0836|invalid1=yes}}   produces ISSN 1028-0836
  • {{ISSN|1028-0836|invalid1=no}}   produces ISSN 1028-0836 Parameter error in {{issn}}: Invalid ISSN.
  • {{ISSN}}   produces Parameter error in {{issn}}: Missing ISSN.
