Adding an optinal second parameter will change the displayed text of the link, making it a piped link, for example,
>{{UK-railway-routemap|"Little" North Western Railway|North Western Railway}}

The optional named parameter |type=

Categories
By default the template will be included in Category:Templates for railway lines of the United Kingdom. However, adding the parameter |cat=
provides a shortcut for other categories:
|cat= |
Category | Text |
---|---|---|
no | none | … a UK railway. |
L or LON or London | Category:Templates for railway lines of London | … a London-area railway. |
N or NI | Category:Templates for railway lines of Northern Ireland | … a Northern Ireland railway. |
S or Scotland | Category:Templates for railway lines of Scotland | … a Scottish railway line and/or company. |
W or Wales | Category:Templates for railway lines of Wales | … a Welsh railway line and/or company. |

STN or station | Category:United Kingdom station layout templates* | … a (place) railway station. |
* in addition to Category:Templates for railway lines of the United Kingdom
Note that this parameter is not case sensitive: i.e. |cat=NO
produces the same result as |cat=no
.
The optional named parameter |catidx=
will add a sort key to the category.
